Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalem. Nottingham. Is a contender for the title of "England's Oldest Pub" due to its supposed establishment in 1189. Partially built into the cave system beneath Nottingham Castle
According to local legend it takes its name from the 12th Century Crusades to the Holy Land: legend has it that knights who answered the calls to join the crusades stopped off here for a pint on their way to Jerusalem. It is even claimed that Richard the Lion Heart himself visited the pub.
The pub is famous for its caves, carved out of the soft sandstone rock (beneath the castle) against which the building is set. The larger "ground level" caverns are now used as the pub's rear rooms. There is also a network of caves beneath the building.
In one room we have a wooden model of a ship. the ‘cursed galleon.’ It's claimed that people who have cleaned it have all met a mysterious death. Over the years no one was allowed to dust the ship allowing inches of thick dust and grime to build up! The cursed galleon is now encased in glass. The pub also contains an antique chair. It is claimed that if a woman sat in the chair she would increase her chances of becoming pregnant!
Unfortunately, it's a Greene King Pub (Greedy King). They have devasted the local breweries, and I will not give them the time of day! Therefore, drink something they dont brew! BUT THE PUB IS FANTASTIC!
